There will be a group exhibition, entitled Durban Delights, that opens on the 1st October,at 6pm, until the 10th October.Artists that are taking part, there are ten of us ,all live in the Durban,North coast area and this exhibition is considered avant- garde.Should you be interested in attending,it will be at the Green Gallery,Flanders Mall in Mount Edgecombe,Durban.
My solo exhibition ,FLIGHT,held at Intoto Gallery has been a sensational success. It is a Sold Out show ,all the works have been sold ,except for two small paintings.I am sending two large paintings up next week however, should anyone be interested. The exhibition is still on until the 24 th August.
I have been so honoured on two levels.Firstly, the remarkable response my paintings are receiving from the public and the incredible professionalism and hard work of the curator of Intoto Gallery,Megan Kidd and the director,Jacques Michau. Jacques Michau will be on Morning Live,Sunday, the 2nd of August at 06h45,SABC News Channel 404 on DSTV Bouquet to discuss my exhibition. I have just completed a huge 2.7 m x 1.7 m canvas of 256 hummingbirds flying across the canvas.I have a great love, like many others, for these tiny birds and their colors and combination of colors that are outrageous. It was great fun painting them and there were times I could not believe my eyes at the colors nature has chosen for them..bright yellow, ruby red, pthallo blue, gold, white, rusty ochre..amazing .I have also just completed 126 swooping and swirling barn swallows also on a canvas the dimensions previously mentioned.I know I am not the only one that loves to lie on my back and watch swallows fly and dip overhead.I think these birds are born to play in the air. These paintings can be viewed at In Toto Gallery on the 23 rd July,2015..if you are keen to see them.
This is the subject matter of a new realism painting that I am doing. Why extreme realism? It is good exercise to return to a traditional base now and again,as it reminds the eye and brain to remember light and color. And sometimes,I get worried that the art buyer thinks I cannot paint backgrounds.I choose white backgrounds ,in my contemporary paintings,as it holds the subject matter up to its essence, but now and again,a good background painting is done to keep myself polished.
Hi...This is the first blog I am writing( after discovering,by accident, the toggle thingy to open the blog page..YAY!)Just a short note to say a BIG thanks to everyone's recent patience.I am now healthy and strong.I am back in the studio and working towards a solo exhibition,to be held at In Toto Gallery in Johannesburg .Opening night is the 23 rd July. The working title is "hundreds and maybe thousands of birds". Finding inspiration has led me to hiding in thickets and spying on the private lives of garden birds.Of course,on discovery, the birds shout and hiss rude things at me.Nothing like avian rebukes to put a human in their place.Hope you all can attend the opening night if you live in Johannesburg.
In October,I will be having an exhibition in Durban ,but more information will be forthcoming closer to the date. Also,I was delighted to receive a note from art buyers,Jeremy and Liina-Maija who have given a flock of golden weavers a very happy home in Helsinki,Finland.Dear Jeremy and Liina-Maiija,Thank you.You made my day.Its great to know that the bird paintings are migrating out of South Africa and are making people happy in other parts of this beautiful world. |
